Mel’s EJ Bell Great Birmingham Run for charity 2026

On 3rd May 2026, at 72 years of age, I will run my third official half marathon in the Great Birmingham Run.

I am doing this to raise funds for Age UK Birmingham and Age UK Sandwell, two charities dedicated to improving the quality of life for older people.

Supporting healthy ageing and challenging outdated stereotypes about later life has become part of my mission. I know I am not a typical septuagenarian — but neither are many others. Today, more people are living longer, healthier lives. Yet too many older adults still struggle with isolation, reduced mobility, and the everyday tasks many of us take for granted.

Before registering, I asked myself some difficult questions.
Should I really take on another half marathon in my seventies?
What about the training demands? The risk of injury? The persistent niggle in my knee? The possibility of not meeting expectations?

It would have been easy to stay comfortable.

Instead, I asked a better question: What happens if I don’t try?

Looking back at my previous two races, the answer was clear. Hundreds of pounds were raised. Thousands of people lined the streets. Friends and family gathered in support. The atmosphere was electric. The sense of purpose was profound.

Physical and mental challenges are not the preserve of youth. At any age, they strengthen resilience, improve wellbeing, and help reduce long-term dependency. They allow us to live more fully and remain connected to the people and communities we value.

But many older people do not have that opportunity. They need practical support, advocacy, and community services simply to maintain independence and dignity.

That is why I am running.

Your support will help ensure that older people in Birmingham and Sandwell can stay well, independent, and connected for as long as possible.

If you are able to donate, I would be deeply grateful. Visit: https://ajbellgreatbirminghamrun2026.enthuse.com/pf/melrose-stewart
